Update on limited unprotected strike action at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine in North West Province

This follows the successful resolution between management, unions and representatives of striking employees facilitated by the Rustenburg Municipality Conflict Resolution Committee (CRC) as follows:

  • An undertaking that the approximately 500 employees who participated in unprotected strike action will return to work;
  • That the existing three-year wage agreement effective from July 2011 will be honoured by all parties, namely, management, unions and the aggrieved employees, and that no new wage demands will be tabled or entertained;
  • Parties agree to continue with discussions within the existing employee relations structures where other matters not related to issues contained in the wage agreement will be addressed; and
  • All employees will be allowed to return to work. Allegations of intimidation will continue to be independently investigated and appropriate action will be taken if required.

The CRC, unions, aggrieved employee representatives and mine management have worked hard and constructively over this period on a range of matters. Of prime importance is the issue of remuneration which all stakeholders confirmed has been dealt with successfully during wage negotiations.

In spite of the loss of approximately 14 000 tonnes that could have been hoisted over the three days unprotected strike at North shaft, total tonnes milled for the month should remain unaffected. This was due to the fact that South shaft remained fully operational during the unprotected strike and that there was available stockpile.

RBPLat management appreciates the constructive manner in which all have engaged in the discussions. The CRC will continue to fulfill a facilitating role and it is confirmed that all parties will continue to work towards implementing sustainable long-term solutions.

The disruption is production is regrettable, however, RBPlat management is pleased that the safety of employees, surrounding communities and physical property was ensured.
