Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) is a black-owned and controlled, mid-tier platinum group metals (PGMs) producer, listed on the JSE Limited, which operates the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) and is constructing the Styldrift I Project, both of which are located in the North West province of South Africa.
Since the discovery of platinum by Hans Merensky in the late 1800s, a move that precipitated a ‘platinum rush’ for ownership by major mining companies, the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN) has endured attempts to strip the Bafokeng of the mineral wealth that is its right and heritage. In the 1990s, however, after extensive engagement with the relevant mining companies, the payment of equitable royalties to the RBN in exchange for the right to mine this valuable land was negotiated.
